The Government of Pakistan has restored mobile internet services across the country, after a three-day suspension following protests and riots sparked by the arrest of Imran Khan, Chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

The restoration of mobile internet services was announced by the telecom industry, which has received instructions to resume operations. In addition, popular social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and YouTube are expected to be restored soon.

On May 9th, 2023, mobile internet or data services were suspended throughout Pakistan following the arrest of Imran Khan by Rangers personnel at the Islamabad High Court (IHC).

The PTI Chief was arrested in connection with the Al-Qadir Trust case, which alleges that he, his wife, and other PTI leaders were involved in a settlement between the PTI government and a property tycoon that caused a loss of nearly £190 billion to the national exchequer.

The suspension of mobile internet services has had a significant impact on the economy, resulting in the loss of billions of rupees. Daily laborers, including delivery riders and drivers working for online cab services like Careem, were particularly affected by the suspension.

However, there are indications that mobile internet services will be restored soon, and relevant orders have already been issued. It may take a few minutes to a few hours for services to become fully operational.
